Students in Upstate’s Donor Initiative host a presentation on organ donation Tuesday Nov. 6, featuring Rob Kochik, executive director of the Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network.
The lunch presentation is at noon in the ninth-floor auditorium in Weiskotten Hall.
“The primary goal of this event is to offer an easy opportunity for students to sign up to be organ donors,” said Yoni Kurland, a second-year medical student and Donor Initiative member. “We hope that the event will trigger discussions among the student body about the importance of this subject as well as dispel any misconceptions.”
Yoni said he’s not sure how many Upstate students are registered organ donors. “We’re hoping for 200 students to show up, and we plan to distribute the extra forms to convenient locations around the school after the event,” he said.
The Recovery Network’s Kochik plans to give a general overview of organ donation and touch on common misconceptions and ethical issues surrounding the topic.
The Donor Initiative is a program coordinated by Upstate’s Center for Civic Engagement.
