Dr. Lubna Wani is a clinical investigator and internist treating acute and chronic diseases and conditions such as heart disease and diabetes in adult patients, and an advocate for women and heart disease. Dr. Wani will address the impact heart disease has on women and how the disease is different in women than in men.
Cardiovascular nurses Alicia Taylor and Elizabeth Urban talk about a new health event in Syracuse called Strong Women, Strong Hearts. The day will feature special presentations by Upstate Cardiologist Luna Bhatta and Upstate’s Heart Failure Coordinator Lorri Langdon, among others. The event will also provide free health screenings, nutritional information with heart-healthy tastings, exercise information and classes, and stress-management presentations that will incorporate therapeutic massage, yoga, and meditation classes, as well as Reiki therapy.
Bruce Searles, director of the Cardiovascular Perfusion program in Upstate’s College of Health Professions, will speak about the job of a perfusionist (they operate the heart-lung machine in the operating room) and how his program goes about training them, what sorts of background they have coming into the program and how long the training lasts and whats involved.
Dr. Randolph Chitwood, Jr. is one of the world leaders in minimally invasive and robotic mitral valve surgery, and recognized as the first heart surgeon to perform robot-assisted heart valve surgery in North America. Chitwood currently serves as Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Sr. Vice Chancellor at East Carolina University.
