About HealthLink on Air
“HealthLink on Air” is an award-winning 60-minute program produced since 2006 by Upstate Medical University, the academic medical center in Syracuse, NY. The show airs every Sunday on National Public Radio station WRVO (89.9 FM & HD2 Oswego/Syracuse; 90.3 FM & HD2 Syracuse; 91.7 FM & 99.9 Watertown; 90.1 FM & 92.3 FM Hamilton; 91.9 FM Utica; 90.5 FM Cortland; 90.7 FM Geneva; and 89.9 Norwich.)
“HealthLink on Air” provides a weekly dose of information on health and medical issues affecting Central New Yorkers. The program showcases health professionals and researchers from Upstate Medical University, Upstate University Hospital, the Central New York community and those visiting the region who are involved with health care issues and events. The interviews are permanently archived at www.healthlinkonair.org
The host is Linda Cohen, a veteran TV broadcaster who has long been involved in local health care. She also serves as the communications and patient services coordinator for the internal medicine offices of Paul S. Cohen, MD. Previously she worked in marketing for the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology and the Onondaga County Department of Aging & Youth, and before that, she was producer and host of Time Warner Cable Channel 13’s Families in Focus weekly television interview show.
The managing editor is Amber Smith, a 25-year veteran medical journalist who covered Upstate Medical University during her tenure at Syracuse’s daily newspaper, The Post-Standard. Early in her career she worked as a volunteer paramedic at North Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps, NAVAC. Later, she earned a master’s degree in Health Services Management and Policy. Assistant managing editor, Jim Howe brings a background of reporting and editing to the position of clinical writer in Upstate’s Marketing and University Communications Department, including more than two decades at the Syracuse Post-Standard and a master’s degree in journalism from Syracuse University. He writes on a variety of topics for Upstate’s quarterly magazines, Upstate Health and Cancer Care. That variety reflects a wide range of personal interests, including history, food, travel, photography, pursuing his next black belt in mixed martial arts and hearing about the world of medicine from family members in the field.
The producer is Steve Marks, manager of teleconferencing and multimedia services in the Educational Communications Department. Marks, who has more than 30 years experience in media and communications technology, oversees production of Upstate’s “HealthLink on Air” program, with assistance from audio engineers Gerard Roy and John Miller.
