Matthew Caraher, 3rd year student in the doctor of physical therapy (DPT) program at Upstate’s College of Health Professions, talks about the Move 5K - a run/walk/wheelchair race coming up in September at Green Lakes State Park. The event is a fundraiser for Move Along Inc, a program devoted to enhancing the abilities of individuals with medically documented limitations, and Upstate’s Physical Therapy Club. Dr. Lucy Barbera, new art therapist at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, describes how the arts help children tell their story, since they may not have the words or the vocabulary to express their emotions. A wide variety of developmentally appropriate art media is offered, including but not limited to photography, painting, clay, drawing, weaving, beading, collage making, visual journaling, and play therapy.
