Upstate University Hospital and the national organization WomenHeart are hosting Central NY WomenHeart—free monthly meetings that serve as a support network for women who are living with heart disease.  Upstate’s Jamie Waterstripe RN and heart disease survivor Leisha Tedford MSW talk about the support group, held at Upstate’s OASIS/HealthLink Learning Center, 1 Telergy Parkway (6333 State Route 298) in East Syracuse. The public is invited to an Open House on Monday, July 30, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Dr. Robert Corona, who recently returned to Upstate after working at Welch Allyn for 16 years, talks about the future of cancer diagnostics. Microscopes as we know them will be embedded into sophisticated computer systems that will aid pathologists in making accurate diagnoses.

Psychologist Brian Rieger, director of Upstate’s Concussion Management Program, talks about the diagnosis and treatment of a concussion, defined as a mild traumatic brain injury that occurs when the normal functioning of the brain is disrupted by a blow or jolt to the head.  There is a new law in New York State that requires schools to develop a concussion team consisting of parents, school and medical providers, which is modeled after the REAP Concussion Management Program.

Dr. Richard O’Neill and host Linda Cohen tackle another listener’s question: “How do I talk to my child when their coach commits suicide amid allegations of child sexual abuse?” Dr. O’Neill stresses that the best protection is to keep open, honest communication in a family so your child feels comfortable coming to their parents with everything.
